
Hanks His next role, the astronaut and commando Jim Lovell, in the docudrama Apollo 13 (1995) - brought him back together with Ron Howard. The film was widely lauded by critics and also by the performances of the whole ensemble (which comprised Kevin Bacon and Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise and Ed Harris) and Kathleen Quinlan. The film garnered nine Academy Award nominations and won two. Later in the year, Hanks starred in Disney/Pixar's computer-animated film Toy Story (1995), as the voice of Sheriff Woody. A year later, Hanks made his directorial debut with the musical comedy That Thing You Do! (1996) about the rise and fall of a popular 1960s group, also playing the role of a music producer. Richard Schickel of Time magazine said that his performance was "charming", and most critics agreed that Hanks role in the film earned him a place in the top romantic comedy stars of his time.
